What is DOSM Datathon 2024?

DOSM Datathon or The Malaysia Data Innovation Talent x DOSM Datathon 2024 (MDIT x DD 2024) is a national-level competition organised by Department of Statistics, Malaysia (DOSM) in collaboration with Statistics Club (inStats), College of Computing, Informatics and Mathematics, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). The competition, which is open to university students, provides an opportunity for them to develop their skills in data analysis and the use of the latest technology software. In an increasingly data-driven world, the ability to analyse and understand data is an extremely important skill.

 This also helps students enhance their competitiveness in the increasingly competitive job market while supporting the country's capacity development in data science and analytics. With the theme of "Finding Digital and Green Skills" focusing on current issues, this competition also aims to encourage innovation and creative solutions among students, as well as foster collaboration and professional networking among participants from various institutions.

DOSM

The Department of Statistics Malaysia was established in 1949 under the Statistics Ordinance 1949 and was initially known as the Bureau of Statistics. At that time, the statistics produced were limited to external trade and estate agriculture.

In 1965, the Bureau of Statistics was renamed the Department of Statistics Malaysia and began operating under the provisions of the Statistics Act 1965. Since then, the functions and roles of the Department have expanded to include the collection of data/information across economic and social sectors.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia is a leading government agency under the Prime Minister's Department, entrusted with the responsibility of collecting, interpreting, and disseminating up-to-date statistics to monitor the economic and social performance of a developing nation.

The Department's headquarters is located in the Federal Government Administrative Centre, Putrajaya, with state offices in every state. Additionally, several operational offices have been established in certain states to further strengthen data collection activities more effectively and efficiently across the country.
